A lot has happened on the internet since Chevrolet presented its third generation Colorado in July 2022. Chevrolet has finally decided to redesign their Colorado, and it’s a defining position for them. Chevrolet has equipped the Colorado with the Silverado 1500 engine, abandoning the previous engines. A new facade, a redesigned cabin, a better set of features and much more await inside.
On the other hand, GMC has recently introduced the third generation Canyon, and it looks amazing inside and out. Of course, they’ve used GM’s new 2.7-liter turbo engine and equipped the truck with even more features. A freshly brewed Canyon AT4X joins the team along with some compelling packages and new colors.
UPDATED NOVEMBER 2022: The article is updated with the latest news on this and new related information about the two aforementioned American trucks.
2023 GMC Canyon VS Chevrolet Colorado: Engine, Performance and Mileage
Both GMC and Chevrolet ditched the previous engines in favor of a more powerful and efficient 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine.
For the new Colorado, Chevrolet offers only one engine choice, but the engine comes with three different power levels. The 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine inside the WT and LT offers 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. The more expensive Z71 and Trail Boss trims offer a Turbo Plus variant of the engine, capable of 310 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Both the Turbo and Turbo Plus engines can pull up to 7,700 pounds, making them excellent machines for everyday work. The top-line ZR2 offers a “High-Output Engine” that cranks out 310 ponies and 430 lb-ft of torque. Although this unit offers more torque, towing capacity is limited to 6,000 pounds due to modifications.
GMC offers the Canyon with only one track, unlike the Colorado. The 2.7-liter Turbo High-Performance engine is standard on all models. This unit produces 310 horses and 430 lb-ft of torque. The AT4, Elevation and Denali offer up to 7,700 pounds of towing, which further drops to 6,000 pounds in AT4X trim and 5,500 pounds after you equip the AT4X Edition 1 package. However, the Canyon is equipped with a 21.5-liter fuel tank, which provides greater fuel range.
While we’re not aware of how quickly both of these trucks will accelerate, we expect the GMC Canyon to be faster than the Colorado. This is for two important reasons – one is the lower curb weight and the other is larger wheel dimensions. The base model of the GMC Canyon weighs 4,430 pounds, while the Colorado is heavier at 4,716 pounds. In addition, the lower models of the Canyon offer better off-road performance with 9.6 inches of ground clearance.
The 2023 GMC Canyon has style
If you’re familiar with the previous GMC Canyon, you know how badly it needed a redesign. Fortunately, GMC has given the Canyon the Herculean look it deserves. The Canyon’s fascia has the bad-boy look with a large headlamp assembly that houses the L-shaped stylish DRLs that run from top to bottom. This unit includes a set of LED bulbs for low beam and one large LED bulb for high beam. The new grille has a distinctive design with rectangular chrome or black details and a honeycomb grille behind. Additionally, the AT4X trim looks sportier with a new off-road bumper that includes a wider winch, a performance skid plate, a safari bar and a new 30-inch LED bar for better visibility in darker conditions.
Chevrolet has introduced its third generation Colorado after eleven long years. They have redesigned the exterior of the Colorado and given it a muscular and modern look. The new Colorado looks meaner and more exclusive than before. The Colorado’s fascia is dominated by a pair of wedge-shaped headlights that house a set of bright bi-LED headlights and thin DRLs. In the center, the fascia showcases a large black grille with honeycomb surrounds and a thick black belt including a Chevy “bow tie” and ZR2 or Z71 badges. The hood is more muscular than before, and the contoured body lines reinforce the Colorado’s muscular look. Overall, the Colorado looks more mature and buffed.
Overall, we like the GMC Canyon’s exterior design more because of its sportier styling, more features, and more rugged demeanor.
The 2023 GMC Canyon offers a richer cabin than some
GMC has packed the Canyon with a gorgeous cabin, which is hard to find in pickup trucks, to say the least. The interior looks absolutely exclusive, with an elegant design and quality materials all around. Durable seat materials, high-quality hard plastic, artificial leather and good-quality interior parts raise the luxury quotient. The dash comes with open-pore wood or carbon fiber accents. In addition, most interior parts are decorated with quilted leather surfaces or white artificial leather with red stitching.
The Colorado’s interior looks very similar to the Canyon’s, and it looks great for a work-focused truck. Still, Chevrolet has adorned the Colorado’s cabin with durable materials that promise excellent quality. The dashboard design is similar – two screens flanked by a metal-look piece. Like the Canyon’s dashboard, the controls are very intuitive, clearly labeled and ergonomically placed. The parts of the dashboard will be decorated with either carbon black interior accents or Artemis trim.
Both the Colorado and Canyon seats are excellent in terms of comfort and space. Premium seats in fabric, vinyl or perforated leather are offered. The front seats offer 40.3 inches of headroom and 45.2 inches of legroom, making life inside very comfortable. Rear seat passengers also get 38.2 inches of headroom and 34.7 inches of legroom, which is suitable for average-sized adults.
The 2023 GMC Canyon offers more features
The Colorado offers vinyl, premium cloth or perforated leather seats, power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support and heat. The driver gets an 8- or 11-inch cluster, an 11.3-inch touchscreen, a premium audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a wireless charger. For safety, Colorado offers the Chevrolet Safety Package, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, ACC, HD rearview camera and pedestrian alert.
The GMC Canyon is more expensive than the latter, but it adds all the above features and excels with an 11-inch cluster, 6.3-inch HUD, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a seven-speaker Bose Audio system. Additionally, a safety alert seat is added in the Denali trim level and AT4X.
The GMC Canyon AT4X is the first pickup to feature a front and rear underbody camera with wash function, an off-road safari bar and a 30-inch LED bar. So it’s better equipped than its Chevy sibling, the Colorado.
The 2023 GMC Canyon is the best truck in the competition
After comparing both trucks, it’s pretty obvious that the GMC Canyon is the superior of the two. It comes standard with a muscular engine, looks stronger, offers a luxurious cabin and has a superior set of features. But the Colorado is great for people on smaller budgets looking for a truck.
As of November 2022, the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado are only available to spec and order under the 2022 model year pages, with the 2023 model year yet to be officially released and no further news or updates.
On their respective websites, you can build a Canyon from $30,975 and a Colorado from $28,250, with two-wheel drive and the most basic trims and cheapest body styles.
Current competitors include the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma, both of which are compelling options.
The Toyota Tacoma is due for an upgrade for 2024, possibly including an electric version, while the recently updated Ford Ranger includes styling in line with the F-150 and has a Raptor performance version.
