Why manufacturers are buying electric cars all wrong

In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, we can drastically increase it. Automakers are focusing their EVs on the wrong type of vehicle – draining resources, creating inconvenience and costing millions of dollars. We believe there is a better approach to the whole problem, one that is much easier to achieve, is better not only for the health of our planet but also our own, and is something that can be implemented in a relatively short period of time. This is how this can be done.

If you were chosen to choose which areas of the world needed to become as emission-free as possible as soon as possible, you’d probably go for the cities, wouldn’t you? Cities are areas of dense population. We have huge traffic jams filled with emitting vehicles and thousands of people walking right by and breathing the fumes and getting sick years later. Emission-free cities would lead to improved global health and good for mother nature. Now take the highways and rural areas, what would be the effect of building electric car infrastructure there? Sure, we again benefit from being kinder to the environment; But the health benefits for humans are nowhere near as widespread. This is because rural areas and areas with freeways nearby are less densely populated and harmful gases do not reach people as easily. In addition, commuters in most cases drive with the windows rolled up and inhale the air in the cabin of their vehicle. This makes people’s health problems less acute compared to large densely populated cities.

Electrifying just our cities is easier

Electrifying a city means producing small vehicles that run on electricity and produce zero emissions while driving. Such vehicles are easy to electrify because they only need a small battery pack to move their low mass and small tires efficiently around the shorter distances of a city. In addition, the low wind resistance at city speeds makes achieving a high usable range even easier. Installing charging stations is also easy because we only need to make use of the city’s existing electrical infrastructure. As batteries get smaller, charging will quickly require less powerful chargers that are cheaper, kinder to the environment and place less strain on the electrical infrastructure. In fact, the entire manufacturing process for such a vehicle will be far less environmentally damaging than producing an electric sedan or SUV. Think about it, you can build two or three city cars with the materials needed to build just one huge and arguably useless electric pickup truck like the Hummer EV or Ford F-150 lightning.

Hummer EV and Ford F-150 Lightning take us to the main issue in the electric car industry. Since many countries have said that all vehicles should be electric by about 2035, automakers are trying to find a way to electrify every single type of vehicle. This is a task that is currently impossible because the technology to power larger vehicles is not here yet. This has led to cars that are mostly useless, overkill and will undoubtedly do more harm than good to the environment. An EV Hummer weighs an insane 9,063 pounds and its battery pack alone is heavier than a small city car like a Fiat 500. Just imagine the speed at which an EV Hummer will chew through tires, brakes and consumables in general. The worst part is that it serves no particular purpose. It can’t tow for much more than 150 miles and there’s no way you’d use it for off-roading due to its size and again poor range handling in demanding conditions.

So what’s the point we’re trying to make here? The point is that we haven’t developed the technology to make vehicles that need to do heavy work work the way we need them to. Because of this, these vehicles currently do more harm than good because they use an insane amount of material to produce. For such a vehicle to be efficient, the batteries must be much smaller, lighter and must be able to be charged quickly from any normal power source. A feat that is still many years away. All the time, resources and effort needed to build a truck of this size could go into producing more city cars that will clean up the air we breathe while reducing our carbon footprint. Currently, there is no need to electrify highways and work industries because it is not the main priority. Manufacturers can work on such projects behind the scenes with thorough testing and research, but producing and selling electric work vehicles is doing more harm than good right now.

I hope what we are trying to say is clear. We are in no way against the production of a truck like the F-150 Lightning and Hummer EV. It’s just that they aren’t a viable and efficient option right now because other types of vehicles can work much more efficiently and effectively. What are your thoughts on this?
