Powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine, the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon produces 285 hp with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. This gas-powered SUV offers all the terrain features that anyone could ask for. The Wrangler can quite easily reach the top of a rock pile with its Dana 44 heavy front and rear locking shafts, disconnecting front sway bar and 10 inch ground clearance. Axle gears can be mounted at an extra cost to provide more torque in each wheel and in combination with the low gear ratio it is possible to crawl over objects with low speed and ultimate control. BF Goodrich KO2 tires offer an incredible grip on all surfaces. There is part-time four-wheel drive with a 4: 1 crawler gear, to help it climb up large piles of rocks. It fights along broken terrain, stone poles and dirt-filled paths like a master, and sucks up terrain that would get you in irregular panic in any other vehicle. It is made to be an off-road car, and that is where it stands out like no other.
Despite Wrangler’s insane terrain characteristics, it’s definitely not perfect. On the asphalt it feels a bit fluid, with a lot of body rolling. The tires seem to be noisy on the asphalt, while your stops at the gas stations will be plentiful. There is a 6.5-inch touch screen, but the Wrangler is not loaded with the FCA’s excellent Uconnect system. Instead, you get a GPS with dated graphics and lag response times. Many people would think that a car like this would be much better in a manual transmission, but they would be wrong. It’s really far from ideal, with a rubbery feel and a gear lever that’s way too long. The automatic transmission works much better for everyday driving on or off-road driving, at the end of the day the Wrangler is made for off-road driving and will never be a fast accelerator pedal or a comfortable cruiser.
Has the Wrangler finally received an interior upgrade?
In a word, no. Ironically, getting into the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicons cab is like getting over a mountain, thanks to its 10.5-inch ground clearance and huge tires. Once you have climbed the mountain, it’s like going back in time, as the Wrangler has not received an interior update since 2011 when it revived a curvier dashboard and still nothing had changed with the 2016 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, the front seats are adequate while the rear seats offer passengers a seat basically on the floor in a knee-up position, almost without legroom. Despite all the downsides of the Wrangler interior, the majority of it can be customized as many aftermarket parts can be purchased to fit the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.
The Freedom panels with hard tops on some models of Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon give you combat and a time-consuming task. Because the panels, which make up the front half of the top, only come loose after several latches have been loosened and two large screws have been removed, while the Wrangler does not even give you a designated place to place them, although a storage bag can be added.
