GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado are American classics born in the USA, right? The truth may not be that simple. These pickup trucks are both made from components from around the world. While some Sierra 1500s and Silverado 1500s are mounted in the United States, others are mounted in Mexico.
Is GMC Sierra made in the USA?
Neither the GMC Sierra nor the Chevy Silverado are entirely made in the United States. All double cabins and some crew cabins GM 1500 are mounted in Fort Wayne, Indiana. All standard cabins and the remaining 1500 crew cabins are assembled in Silao, Mexico – according to the GM Authority. Each of these pickup trucks consists of mostly foreign parts.

The first thing to understand is that no modern pickup is completely made in the United States. The nearest full-size truck may actually be the 2022 Toyota Tundra. The tundra was built in San Antonio, Texas. With many of Toyota’s suppliers nearby, 65% of the Tundra parts come from the United States or Canada.
General Motors is a multinational company. To reduce costs, the car manufacturer opened a factory in Silao, Mexico as early as 1996. Today, GM Silao assembles many Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks. In addition, GM has upgraded this facility to 600 hectares to also manufacture engines and transmissions.
Is GMC Sierra American?
All double cab GMC Sierra 1500 and some crew cab models are mounted in the United States, but these trucks come from all over the world. A “Made in the USA” vehicle must be 50% manufactured in either the USA or Canada. 2021 GMC Sierra and Silverado did not qualify, but 2022 maybe.

The American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA) forces companies to declare the proportion of components manufactured in the United States or Canada. They must print this percentage on the window decal of all new vehicles.
2021 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado could only claim that 46% of their parts were manufactured in the USA or Canada. GM did not specify what percentage was from the US specifically. This voluntarily meant that 38% of the parts came from Mexico.
You can say with certainty that a 2021 GMC Sierra is made in North America. But it would be a stretch to claim that most of the truck was made in the United States
Where are GMC Sierra parts manufactured?
A GMC Sierra 1500 can contain parts from the United States, Mexico, Japan, Brazil, South Korea, France, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Hungary, India and Thailand. While your GMC Sierra is mounted in North America, it is a truly global vehicle.
So what parts of your GMC Sierra come from? GM has not released the origin of each component. But according to JD Power, GM has the capacity to build heavy components of the Sierra 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500 in Flint, Michigan. Flint also happens to be where GM assembles its heavy Sierra and Silverado trucks.
GM mostly uses overseas components for electronics and interiors. The car manufacturer has historically collaborated with Mexican companies that build components such as stereos or that wallpaper interior parts such as steering wheels. Finally, the GM Silao plant can manufacture both engines and transmissions: some Sierra 1500 driveline options could theoretically be manufactured in Mexico.
While only 46% of the 2021 GMC Sierra was manufactured in the United States or Canada, things may change for the 2022 model. JD Power predicts that this figure will rise to 62%.
Although it is unlikely that more than 50% of the truck will be built in the US alone, this figure of 62% in the US / Canada would still be high enough to market it as “Made in the US”. ALAA has not yet approved and published official GMC Sierra percentages, so we’ll just have to wait and find out.
