This week, international media got a chance to spend some time with the new 2022 Jeep® Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid and 4xe models. It is the first time that both electrified Renegade and Compass models were together for the first time in public. All four models mark a major step in the Jeep brand’s electrification strategy to move to “Zero Emission Freedom”.
“The electrification plan we started at the end of 2020 is progressing rapidly with the launch of 4xe Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) technology on Compass, Renegade and Wrangler SUVs,” said Antonella Bruno, Head of Jeep Brand Europe. “And today with the new Jeep Compass and Renegade e-Hybrid, we add an additional level of electrification to our offering, contributing to this transformation that we believe so much that this summer the new Jeep Grand Cherokee will make its debut in its Only 4xe version and the first 100% electric SUV will be launched at the beginning of 2023. In addition, we will put an end to all traditional combustion engines in the major European markets, with the exception of Italy, at the end of 2022. is a historic turning point for the Jeep brand and a testament to our desire to continue at a steady pace towards 100% electrified freedom.”
In 2021, 1 in 4 Jeep SUVs sold in Europe was an electrified 4xe model. With the early numbers entering the first two months of 2022, that figure has improved to 1 in 3 SUVs. Shows that the new electrified models are getting a lot of attention with the EU’s growing emission regulations.
e-hybrid models –
With the new e-Hybrid propulsion system, Renegade and Compass offer a new option for the two-wheel drive (4×2) segment. With customers’ driving habits unchanged despite the ongoing rising fuel prices and increased emission regulations, and now you can enjoy a true hybrid experience with the ability to enter an all-electric mode during parking and low-speed driving thanks to “EV Capabilities”.
So how does it work?
First of all, once in the vehicle, it turns on silently and starts in full electric mode thanks to its silent start function. However, this is only one of the “EV” features that are automatically turned on in the Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid. For example, Energy Recovery turns on by itself to recover the energy lost during deceleration or braking. In the former case, the e-Coasting mode is activated as soon as you take your foot off the gas to recreate the sensation of engine braking. On the other hand, the e-Braking feature turns on when you brake to increase energy recovery. Meanwhile, recovered energy and power supply are indicated on the instrument panel, and it is possible to see the hybrid system’s energy flow on the infotainment touchscreen. During all these driving modes, the internal combustion engine is shut down and disconnected from the transmission.
The driving experience on board the Jeep e-Hybrid SUV also ensures that the vehicle restarts using only the electric motor thanks to its e-Launch function. But when you press the throttle for better performance, the internal combustion engine quietly turns back on and switches from hybrid driving to automatic mode. And what if you move slowly in bumper-to-bumper traffic, which often happens in city driving? In this case, there is the e-Queueing mode, which allows the vehicle to stop and go in all-electric mode, and the e-Creeping mode, which allows the vehicle to travel with the engine off by simply releasing the brake pedal. Once you’re out of traffic and traveling faster, it’s possible to optimize the internal combustion engine’s load point shift through the calibration of drive or brake torque from the electric motor.
The end result sees a further increase in system efficiency. In addition, during acceleration the e-Boosting function accentuates quick response, as the electric motor supports the petrol engine by increasing the torque to the wheels. When the Jeep Compass or Renegade e-Hybrid has reached its destination, it is possible to rely on the e-Parking function that allows you to carry out the necessary movements electrically, even in reverse, making them practical, silent and not releasing even when you using the automatic parking system.
4xe models –
Thanks to their PHEV technology, the 4xe Compass, Renegade and Wrangler models are the highest performing and most fun Jeep SUVs ever. They can literally satisfy the well-known claim “Go Anywhere, Do Anything”. At the same time, both are ideal vehicles for everyday city driving as their plug-in hybrid technology enables zero-emission mobility and 50 kilometers (31 miles) of city driving in all-electric mode. What’s more, fun is efficient aboard the Jeep 4xe SUV, and its renowned off-road ability balances fun driving with environmental awareness.
On ignition, both models are hybrid “as standard” to guarantee maximum ease of use and efficiency on all roads. During city driving, the 100% electric mode allows zero-emission driving with only the electric motor providing traction to the rear tires. 50 kilometers is perfect for most city driving and emissions in the WLTP hatchback are less than 50 g/km CO2. It’s made even better by the ease with which it can be charged, with a full charge taking about an hour and a half. Still, the Renegade and Compass 4xe PHEV definitely don’t forget that they’re unstoppable Jeep SUVs. When the road gets tough and requires greater traction, two propulsion systems are activated on both axles. This improves off-road capabilities coordinated by the Select Terrain system, which has been updated for the electric 4×4 driving modes. Finally, it should be noted that the 4xe technology ensures greater capacity compared to a traditional 4×4 as the electric motor delivers 250 Nm (184 ft.-lb.) of torque almost instantly, allowing the greatest control of traction and torque even at low speeds.
Introducing the New Upland Trim –
Both the Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid and 4xe models get a new special edition. Based on the range-topping ‘S’ model, the Renegade gets exclusive 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, polished exterior finish and automatic parking system; Meanwhile, standard equipment on the Compass includes 19-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels, body-colored fenders, a black roof, an automatic tailgate, and leather seats that can be adjusted electrically for the driver. All vehicles provide a versatile and relaxing driving experience made even safer by their wide range of advanced driver assistance systems.
They are all equipped with automatic transmission, which improves comfort in city driving and long journeys, and a full range of safety equipment that places them at the top of their respective segments. In fact, the Compass was the first Jeep model in Europe to reach level two autonomous driving thanks to the Highway Assist system that combines the functions of the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Centering systems. Finally, both models include next-generation Uconnect services, which enable control of vehicle functions while driving and even remotely with the My Uconnect app.
