Jeep Grand Cherokee L 3.6L Limited: Bigger than ever

The successor to the vehicle that is considered by many to be the world’s first luxury or comfort-oriented SUV, the Grand Cherokee has carried on the Jeep Wagoneer tradition 1963-91 since 1992.

Launched in the fifth generation earlier this year, the latest Grand Cherokee is the largest, most refined, spacious and luxurious to date, even as Jeep revives the Wagoneer nameplate as a full-size body-on-chassis SUV. That said, the new uni-body Grand Cherokee is now better positioned to compete with European premium SUVs and uses the Stellantis group’s modern Giorgio platform, shared with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, instead of its 2010 predecessor Mercedes-derived platform.

The fifth generation Grand Cherokee is offered in two lengths and is the first available with a 3-row 7-seater configuration, driven in L-shape. A development of the design direction of its predecessor, the new Grand Cherokee headlights are narrower, heavier and more atmospheric, while its characteristic 7-compartment grille is equally narrower and more upright, with a protruding and predatory shark angle. Longer and with a smoother waist, the new Grand Cherokee has a more formal and exclusive look, while the taillights are now also significantly narrower.

Elegant and eager

The extended wheelbase Grand Cherokee L is 5.2 meters long and has a luxurious and classically proportioned stance, with short front and long overhangs at the rear. Subtly bulging square wheel arches differ from length and short wheelhouse tip to the top length of the hood gives it a sleek and elegant profile. Under its well-proportioned and bulging bonnet line, the Grand Cherokee is initially available with 3.6-liter V6 or 5.7-liter V8 engines for the region at present. An optional 2-liter plug-in hybrid is available elsewhere, while high-performance SRT variants are expected but as yet unconfirmed.

The powered Grand Cherokee L 3.6-liter V6, placed far back in the engine compartment to achieve an ideal weight distribution of 50:50, is powered by Jeep’s familiar and reputable Pentastar engine with natural aspiration. By developing 290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb / ft of torque at 4,400 rpm in this application, it is estimated to drive 2,128 kg of Grand Cherokee L through the 0-100 km / h acceleration target of approximately 8.5 seconds. The Pentastar engine is high-speed, agile and eager for the limit of 6,700 rpm, and provides good throttle control to input power increases. Refined and quiet normally, however, a purposeful mechanical tone becomes more audible near its speed limit, rather than some Italian cousins’ more exotic soundtracks.

Grand Cherokee L is a modern monocoque-built SUV with multi-link suspension all around and is a comfortable and safe ride with skilled handling that contradicts its size and weight. With a balanced weight distribution and just the right level of suspension, the Grand Cherokee L turns into curves with nice calm and maintains good control over the whole body, despite its high driving. In outward-facing corners, its rear-facing four-wheel drive and weighting allow you to kick out the rear section briefly, progressively and predictably to adjust a cornering line with the stability control disengaged.

Comfort and commitment

A more agile vehicle than expected, the Grand Cherokee L’s differential with limited slip helps to provide power where it is needed for increased safety and agility on the road and to maintain grip off the road. With selectable driving modes that optimize different parameters for different terrain, Grand Cherokee L Limited also has generous ground clearance of 215 mm and 20.6 ° approach, 18.2 ° break-over and 21.5 ° departure angles.
