Jeep 4xe lineup – What you can buy today & in the future

The first Jeep 4xe (four-by-e) model in the US, the Wrangler 4xe, was launched last year and quickly became a sales success. In July 2021, Jeep USA announced that the Wrangler 4xe was the best-selling PHEV on the market and looks set to maintain this momentum, with CEO Christian Meunier saying that Jeep will have a full EV in all SUV segments by 2025.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe

You can pick up the Wrangler 4xe today in the US, with prices starting at $ 53,795. Wrangler 4xe is sold in three models: Sahara, Rubicon and High Altitude. However, all variants are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 petrol engine using two electric motors that get their juice from a 400V 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery located below the second row of seats. The combined system power is 280 kW (375 hp) and 637 Nm (470 lb.-ft.) of torque, and an 8-speed AT is standard. The Wrangler 4xe is rated for an EV range of 21 miles (34 km) by the EPA.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe prices start at $ 58,095 for the entry-level 4xe trim and range to $ 74,695 for the top Summit Reserve model. A total of 5 trim levels are available. The driveline is identical to the Wrangler 4xe, and the EPA’s pure electric range is 40 km.

The towing capacity is estimated at 6,000 pounds (2,720 kg). It will be interesting to see how the Jeep 4xe Grand Cherokee manages in sales as there is a price difference of 20,000 USD between the base Grand Cherokee and entry-level 4xe (however, the 4xe also adds a lot of standard equipment for that price increase).

Jeep Renegade 4xe (all electric)

Renegade is already available as a PHEV on the European market, and therefore the transition will see a fully electric Renegade in the next generation. Jeep has announced that this year it will debut its first EV (codenamed Jeep 516 EV), which will be smaller than Renegade and run on Stellantis Group’s eCMP platform. Although this platform is a front-wheel drive layout, there have been reports that an electric motor would be mounted at the rear for AWD capacity after a redesign. Renegade EV would be placed above the Jeep ‘Junior’ EV.

Jeep engineers have the option of selecting the eCMP for the Renegade EV or using the upcoming STLA Medium (earmarked for C- and D-segment vehicles), which will ensure a range of at least 700 km. The Renegade 4xe EV may arrive around the end of 2023 or 2024. In accordance with Jeep’s premium positioning, there is a good chance that the Renegade EV will be treated with STLA.

Jeep Compass 4xe (all electric)

Like Renegade, Compass is already available as a PHEV in Europe, and by 2025 we should get the Compass 4xe EV. For the Compass EV, there is no doubt that Jeep will use the STLA Medium architecture, which can accommodate battery packs between 87 kWh and 104 kWh. Several range variants ensure that the Compass EV can be taken on Jeep trails or a camping trip without too much range anxiety.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe (all electric)

A pure electric Jeep Wrangler is underway, as we saw with the Jeep Wrangler Magneto Concept 2021. An updated version of that concept, simply called the Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept, debuted at the 56th annual Easter Jeep Jeep Safari this month.

Based on the Wrangler 2-door, the Wrangler electric concept uses a custom-built axial flow motor that generates 625 horsepower and 850 lb.ft. of torque. It’s a lot of power and torque from a single engine. The maximum current of the propulsion system is 600 amps, and it is possible to maintain it for up to 10 seconds! A 6-speed manual transmission, four individually placed lithium-ion batteries of a total of 70 kWh and running an 800-volt system, an inverter and Wrangler Rubicon’s Rock-Trac transfer case are the other notable mentions among Wrangler Electric’s hardware.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4xe (all electric)

The Grand Wagoneer 4xe EV will be the most expensive Jeep when it launches around 2024. Prices can start from $ 100,000, but then Jeep will go all out to ensure the product’s premium ness. According to reports, the Grand Wagoneer EV may not get the typical EV style where the grille is leveled and the bumpers and wheels are optimized for aerodynamics. Instead, the 7-seater Jeep brand would be visible (even if the grille is closed, designers will make sure there are cutouts or embellishments to mark the Jeep signature). The charging port is expected on the left front screen to provide easy access to charging when parked.

In response to TopElectricSUV during the Jeep APAC roundtable in July 2021, Christian Meunier, CEO of Jeep, said that the Grand Wagoneer EV was like “magic” and unlike anything anyone has seen before with “very very strong acceleration.”

How the Jeep 4xe works

Take the example of the new Grand Cherokee 4xe, which uses the same driveline as the Wrangler 4xe, here is how Jeep has designed its first plug-in hybrid set.

The 2.0-liter I-4 petrol engine uses a two-wheeled turbocharger with low inertia mounted directly on the cylinder head. An electric power steering and an electrically driven air conditioning compressor are used to remove these loads from the engine.

Engine generator

Instead of the conventional generator, a high-voltage liquid-cooled motor generator unit is used which is connected to the engine crankshaft disc via a belt. The role of this engine generator is to spin the engine during start-stop operations and generate electricity for the battery pack. Instead of a torque converter, the Jeep 4xe system uses a larger high-voltage motor generator mounted on the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Two clutches handle power and torque from the e-motor and the motor.

To facilitate only electrical mode, a coupling is mounted between motor and motor, which disconnects so that there is no mechanical link between motor and e-motor. When the linkage is available, the 2.0-liter I-4 and e-engine work in combination to deliver a torque of 637 Nm (470 lb.-ft.).

The 4xe system on the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee uses a 400-volt, 17 kWh battery. On the Grand Cherokee, the battery units and controls are mounted under the vehicle, packed under the floor and protected by a series of slide plates. To keep the battery at its optimum temperature, the battery pack includes a dedicated heating and cooling circuit, which uses Grand Cherokee’s air conditioning refrigerant to operate.

Also mounted under the body is an integrated dual charge module (ICDM) that combines a battery charger and a DC / DC converter in a single, compact unit and a Power Inverter Module. Jeep says that all high-voltage electronics are sealed and waterproof, which is how the Trail Rated Grand Cherokee 4xe achieves water demand up to 24 inches (61 cm).

To facilitate snout-in-parking at charging points, the charging port is located on the left front fender as a pressure opening / closing cover. It includes LED status status indicators, while an LED battery level monitor sits on top of the instrument panel to easily check the battery status during charging.

4xe E Select modes

The Jeep 4xe system also gets 4xe E Selec modes that the driver can use to optimize the hybrid setting. The driver can switch between Hybrid (engine and e-engine are optimized for fuel efficiency), Electrical (acts as an EV until the battery reaches minimal charge, or if more power is desired, then the engine is switched on again), and eSpara (prioritizes the engine and saves battery charge for later use). Jeep claims a range that is only 34 km of electricity.

The Jeep 4xe system includes regenerative braking, and when 4 × 4 is engaged, all wheels supply torque for rain braking. A driver-selectable Max Regen mode results in a more “cool” brake calibration and naturally slows down the Grand Cherokee faster than normal Regen.

The Jeep 4xe Grand Cherokee has a towing capacity of 6,000 lb (2,720 kg), and the Trailhawk 4xe variant has passed through the Rubicon Trail under all-electric power. We should see owners of Grand Cherokee 4xe share their off-road experiences from later this year.
