The Jeep® Wagoneer (WS) enters its second year of production as the brand’s entry-level premium full-size SUV offering. While the 2022 model had a longer run and added other equipment along the way, there are several changes going into 2023 that you should be aware of if you’re in the market for one of these new Wagoneers.
For the 2023 model year, the Wagoneer Series II and Series III will receive a powertrain upgrade with the introduction of Chrysler Group’s all-new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane standard output (SO) inline-six engine. The new inline-six engine is 15% more efficient than the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 it replaces, producing an amazing 420 horsepower and 468 lb.-ft. of torque.
But if the new twin-turbocharged engine has taught you, the Wagoneer Series I will continue with the mighty 5.7-liter HEMI V8 equipped with the next-generation eTorque mild-hybrid system. The HEMI is rated at 392 horsepower and 404 lb.ft. of torque. The eTorque 48-volt hybrid system, as well as cylinder deactivation and Variable Cam Timing (VCT), make it the most fuel-conscious 5.7-liter HEMI yet.
Both engines will be mated to an 8-speed 8HP75 automatic transmission from ZF, allowing for smooth and quick shifting.
four wheel drive –
Three available 4×4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II), an available Quadra-Lift air suspension and a Selec-Terrain traction management system give this premium SUV legendary capability. Quadra-Trac I delivers full-time four-wheel drive with no switches to push or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation of the vehicle over a variety of road conditions. This proven, lightweight single-speed gearbox is effective for improved fuel economy and improves grip by shifting torque to the wheel with the best grip. A mechanical rear limited slip differential is standard.
The two-speed Quadra-Trac II transmission uses input from a variety of sensors to determine tire slip as early as possible and take corrective action. The system also uses the throttle to anticipate quick movements from a stop and maximizes traction before the tire slips. When wheel slip is detected, as much as 100% of available torque is immediately directed to the wheel with the most traction.
Quadra-Drive II, with a rear electronic limited slip differential (eLSD), provides industry-leading traction. The system immediately detects tire slippage and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust to proactively limit or eliminate skidding.
The Wagoneer models feature premium LED headlights, fog lights, taillights and signature daytime running lights, accent badging and a standard side step. Front tow bars are built into the Wagoneer’s front end when equipped with the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow package. To protect critical vehicle components, the optional Advanced All Terrain package on the Wagoneer features four aluminum skid plates, including one for the lower front fascia, fuel tank, transmission and front suspension. Available Quadra-Lift air suspension provides up to 10 inches (25 cm) of ground clearance in combination with the Selec-Terrain traction management system to imbue the Wagoneer with its legendary capability.
From the rear, LED taillights that extend from the rear quarter panel to the tailgate provide an exclusive look. Unique “series” badge on the tailgate subtly shows how a particular vehicle is configured. A Class IV hitch is integrated into the rear bumper and can tow up to 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg), whether powered by the HEMI or Hurricane engine.
With standard 8-passenger seating on all models, Wagoneer models feature a roomy third row – a first for the nameplate. Second-row captain’s chairs are available on the Wagoneer and offer more comfort and space than any other vehicle in the segment.
A one-piece dashboard accentuates the grandeur of the interior with a center stack that elegantly integrates advanced technology and connectivity. The 2023 Wagoneer features the latest, most advanced Uconnect system ever, with a 10.1-inch (25.6 cm) digital display and intuitive user experience. The Wagoneer is available with 50 inches (127 cm) of total digital display area.
Available on the Wagoneer Series III, the McIntosh MX950 Entertainment System, a custom-tuned 19-speaker system, including a 10-inch (25.4 cm) subwoofer, are strategically placed throughout the interior and powered by a 17-channel 950-watt amplifier. An available 10.25-inch (25.7 cm.) passenger display has three main functions: Co-Pilot (navigation, device management), entertainment (via HDMI or Rear Seat Entertainment control) and the ability to view exterior vehicle cameras.
