The GMC Sierra 1500 has mostly been a reliable pickup throughout its life cycle. But if you are looking for a used Sierra, there are some model years you should avoid altogether. There are not very many, but these year models get a huge number of complaints. In addition, the problems are so bad that we recommend that you avoid them at all costs. Here are GMC Sierra 1500 year models you should avoid buying.
The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 is the worst model year ever
Not only does the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 get lots of complaints, but they are also usually significant problems. Having minor problems with any vehicle is normal, but expensive ones can ruin the ownership experience. For the 2014 model, the GMC Sierra 1500 experienced lots of problems with lights, AC and heating, interior accessories, electricity, brakes, engine and more. Most importantly, the NHTSA reported a total of 182 complaints about brake problems alone.
Then 140 light problems, 125 control problems, 97 electrical problems and many more are reported. It is easy to see that this particular year model is full of problems. So many are present that potential buyers should avoid them altogether. It is easily the worst model year overall for this pickup. There are not many model years that have many problems, so it is easy to avoid the worst in the gang.
The 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 just got a little better
The car manufacturer tried to improve its pickup as with all year models. However, it only got minimally better, according to Car Complaints. On-site complaints decreased, as did the reported problems with NHTSA. Unfortunately, there was not enough improvement for the truck to be worth buying. In addition, most of the problems with this year model are the same as the previous iteration. That means for two model years in a row; you should avoid buying GMC Sierra 1500 pickup.
As with the 2014 model, the brakes have the highest volume of problems reported to NHTSA. Next are lights, electricity, steering, driveline and motor. These problems are not only too common, but they are also expensive to repair. There is nothing worse than buying a used model and then having to spend money on repairs, especially in the current used car market, where a 2015 truck like the Sierra 1500 goes for around $ 25,000 for a cheaper model.

If you are set on buying a used GMC Sierra 1500, there are plenty of choices out there. For the most part, year models other than 2014 and 2015 are not plagued by problems at all. If you can afford newer models, they will be your best bet if saving on maintenance is crucial for you. More specifically, the 2016 to 2021 model years are virtually unproblematic.
For those looking for something much cheaper, models older than 2013 are not bad either. From 2001 to 2013, even the most problematic year model (2011) has about one-sixth of the reported problems that the 2014 Sierra 1500 had. Fortunately, if you can find a well-maintained older model, it will last a long time. For the most part, the model as a whole has not had consistent problems.
The GMC Sierra 1500 is a fantastic pickup with lots of usability and reliability. It seems that the worst model years are one-time situations, and the newer ones are better than ever. Although we recommend that you avoid the 2014 and 2015 model years, the latest iterations are wonderful alternatives. The all-new 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is coming soon, and it’s better than ever.
