If you’re looking for a Jeep, there are some compelling new options to choose from: the first plug-in hybrid available in the US, the introduction of a three-row Jeep and the resurgence of an old nameplate that will add new luxury to the Jeep brand.
Here’s what’s new from Jeep and when you can expect to see these vehicles at your local dealer.
2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe
The Jeep Wrangler is an off-road superstar. It comes in a range of trim with a choice of engines, but these choices have not included a hybrid. Until now: This year, the first plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler is launched. It’s called 4xe, pronounced “four times e”, and it adds a whole new dimension to off-road driving.
The power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and two electric motors with a 400-volt, 17kWh battery pack. This gives the Wrangler 4xe 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. It is a responsive powertrain with instant torque and a time of 0-60 miles per hour in just 6 seconds.
It gets an EPA-estimated 49 miles-per-gallon equivalent with an all-electric range of about 21 miles. A selection of E Select driving modes allows you to decide how to use the electric range. The hybrid mode switches between gas and electricity as needed while the electric mode uses the battery until it runs out. There is also eSave mode, which only uses the petrol engine.
Holding on to the electric power until you are ready to ride terrain creates a completely unique terrain experience. Without the noise from the gas engine, all you hear is the sound from outside. Birds, crickets and bubbling streams suddenly become a welcome backdrop to your car journey. Jeep even installs level 2 chargers at selected trailheads, which are free for 4xe owners, so you charge before you go out.
The Wrangler 4xe is only available as a four-door in a series of three trim. Standard features include 20-inch wheels, leather-covered seats, LED lighting, 8.4-inch infotainment touch screen and Alpine audio system with nine speakers. There is also standard four-wheel drive with powerful wide axles, ground clearance of 10.1 inches and the ability to rush up to 30 inches of water. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe starts at $ 47,995 and is available now.
2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
The Grand Cherokee is a full-size SUV with two rows of seats for up to five. The new Grand Cherokee L adds a third row and takes up up to seven seats. It provides a rich, exclusive experience with a beautiful, spacious interior and because it is a jeep, you can still take it off the road and tackle challenging terrain.
There are three available terrain systems, adjustable air suspension and the ability to demand up to 24 inches of water. It also has a ground clearance of 10.9 inches to cope with robust off-road driving. This is a large, luxurious SUV that is ready to get dirty.
The generous third row easily accommodates two adults with enough space for even the six-foot-long audience to be comfortable. There is also an impressive cargo hold with up to 84.6 cubic feet behind the first row along with a maximum towing capacity of up to 7,200 pounds.
The Grand Cherokee L is available in a series of six models with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It ranges in price from $ 36,995 for the Laredo base and tops with the ultra-luxurious Summit Reserve at $ 61,995. There is also a choice of either a 3.6-liter V6 engine or a 5.7-liter V8 engine with extra horsepower and torque that is ideal for towing. Look for Grand Cherokee L in dealerships this summer.
2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer
Jeep takes back a much-loved nameplate with the brand new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, which has three rows of seats and room for eight people. These full-size luxury SUVs will sit at the top of the Jeep range and offer a Jeep’s capacity, the versatility of an SUV and the comforts of a luxury car.
Wagoneer will be available with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive in a three-trim series. The price starts at $ 57,995 for the Series I and rises to $ 72,995 for the Series III. Standard upholstery features include Nappa leather, a heated second row and a 10.1-inch infotainment touch screen.
The Grand Wagoneer will only be four-wheel drive and comes in a choice of four models. Pricing starts at $ 86,995 with standard features, including 24-way electric front seats, premium 19-speaker audio system and a 12.0-inch infotainment touch screen. The Grand Wagoneer upholstery comes in at $ 103,995 with a 10.2-inch front passenger screen, quilted Palermo leather seats with massage, cooling box on the front console and a sound system with 23 speakers.
These are real luxury SUVs, but with all the capacity you would expect from a jeep. There are two V8 engines to choose from that provide the horsepower and torque to get up to speed and handle towing. Three available four-wheel drive systems with available air suspension ensure that the terrain is no problem. Whether it’s highway cruising or off-road adventures, Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have you covered. This vehicle will be released for the 2022 model, so it will probably take a few more months before it arrives at dealers.
