2022 Jeep Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: What are the differences?

We are here to help break down the key differences between the two great jeeps and decide which one is best for you. And just in time – orders are now being placed for the new Wagoneer family, which will go on sale this summer. For reference, both the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer are the same size (and both have long wheelbases that come later) and have the same interior layout for seven or eight passengers. Think of those that are similar to Chevrolet’s Tahoe and Cadillac’s Escalade: Mechanically and structurally the same, but one is nicer and more expensive.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: Design

At first glance, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer are not too different. They are about the same size and both have U-shaped windows, roof racks and bold nameplates on the front, back and sides. But Grand Wagoneer has a more sophisticated grill design, chrome around the windows, a black-painted roof, copper-colored tinted windows and more premium LED lighting that goes into a welcome dance sequence at a remote start.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: The big screen (or the big screens – plural)

Big difference here: Grand Wagoneer has about 75 inches of maximum display space divided into up to seven screens, all of which are standard on the top Series III upholstery. These include the driver’s digital cluster, central infotainment screen, passenger screen, two rear entertainment screens and comfort control screens in the first two rows for climate and seat adjustment.

Wagoneer only has the standard for cluster and central touch screen, with the other three entertainment screens as options. So if you’re looking for that LCD glow … the Grand Wagoneer is your Jeep.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: V-8 engines for everyone!

Each full-size Jeep SUV will be launched with a V-8 under the hood – just not the same. In the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, there is a 5.7-liter V-8 with eTorque 48-volt mild hybrid system. The power is at a hefty 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque, and it can pull 10,000 pounds.

Go up to 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and 5.7 will be replaced by – at launch – a 6.4-liter V-8 that generates 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. It has enough engine to push the big jeep from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds and tow just under 10,000 pounds. We expect more engines to follow, including a plug-in hybrid for the 4xe model.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: Suspension and 4×4 system

Wagoneer is a body-on-frame SUV with rear-wheel drive as standard and three 4×4 systems on offer. It has a standard steel coil spring suspension that holds the SUV 8.0 inches above the ground. Choose Quadra-Lift air suspension, and that ground clearance swells up to 10 inches.

Grand Wagoneer has four-wheel drive as standard, as does the Quadra-Lift suspension, which can also lower the vehicle to get in and out, or for better aerodynamics on the road. Apart from the differences in 4WD and suspension, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are essentially the same body-on-frame SUV underneath.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: Wheel

Wagoneers come standard with 20-inch wheels. There are optional 18-inch ATVs and tires or flashier 22s. The Grand Wagoneer models have standard 20- or 22-inch aluminum rims with four different surface treatments and a three-dimensional wheel capsule with a Wagoneer logo suspended in acrylic. The Grand Wagoneer Obsidian model comes with 22-inch polished wheels with black inserts.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: Material

There is a $ 30,000 price difference between the two Wagoneer models. This means that the leather in the Grand Wagoneer is more flexible, the upholstery is more expensive and that there is an optional Piano Black center support in the instrument panel.

And then there are the wooden talks. Grand Wagoneer has American walnut on the instrument panel, doors and center console. There is no wood inside the Wagoneer, nor does it have any wood fiber on the exterior, as the original models did in the past. Stitch patterns run horizontally over Wagoneer but vertically up the leather lines on Grand Wagoneer.

How about that Obsidian version?

Both Wagoneer models have Series I, Series II and Series III trim levels, but Grand Wagoneer adds another: Obsidian, named after black glass formed by molten lava. This trim will be available sometime after the launch of the Grand Wagoneer and will start at $ 100,995. As it is only available on the GW, it has 4WD, 6.4-liter V-8 and lots of content standard. The color scheme is described as black on black on black, with black accents, wheels and Onyx interior.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: Sound system

Grand Wagoneer introduces for the first time a McIntosh stereo in a vehicle, with 950 watts and 23 speakers and the ability to see digitized receiver status pins dancing on the infotainment screen.

Meanwhile. the bass stereo in Wagoneer is an Alpine-labeled system with nine speakers; customers can choose a McIntosh system with lower watts and 19 speakers.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: Comfort and seating

Wagoneer has a climate control system with three zones; Grand Wagoneers gets a four-zone plumbing system with touch screens in the first two rows to control the air conditioning.

Wagoneer has Nappa leather-trimmed, 12-way electric seats, and Grand Wagoneer complements it with flexible Palermo leather on the top strips for its 24-way adjustable front seats. The second row of captain’s chairs are standard on Grand Wagoneer, and are optional on Wagoneer.

Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: Price

Wagoneer is the more affordable of the two large three-wheeled SUVs, starting at $ 59,995 for a Series I, rear-wheel drive model that will not be available until later this year. Series II starts at $ 69,995, and Series III costs $ 74,995 and can be selected up to approximately $ 100,000.

As already mentioned, the Grand Wagoneer starts at almost $ 30,000 higher than the Wagoneer, at $ 88,995. The Grand Wagoneer Series II is $ 95,995, the Obsidian is $ 100,995, and the top-tier Series III starts at $ 105,995 and can charge up to about $ 113,000.
