2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is connected to the brand’s luxury side with a lot of capacity

For those who want a plug-in hybrid Jeep that is not a life-size rental car where the roof and doors come loose and the windshield folds, your time has come.

Jeep pushed into the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid driveline in the Grand Cherokee. Like its sibling, the Grand Cherokee 4xe 2022 sacrifices nothing in its transition to be more efficient – except your wallet. Just like with the Wrangler, the connection comes with a fairly substantial price premium.

Recycle and reuse

The spec sheet for the Grand Cherokee 4xe reads like an almost carbon copy of its windshield-folding sibling. There is a 2.0-liter turbo-4 with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque along with a 44-hp engine generator (which is connected directly to the crankshaft via a belt and replaces the starter motor). A 17.3-kwh battery pack drives a larger electric motor that produces 134 hp and 198 lb-ft, sandwiched in the 8-speed automatic transmission. The total system power is 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, making the PHEV model the most powerful in the Grand Cherokee series, with 18 hp and 80 lb-ft of torque over the optional 5.7-liter V-8 .

The same three driveline modes, Hybrid, Electric and e-Save, have been moved over and work in the same way as the Wrangler. Hybrid is as it sounds, as is electric. The latter, however, will kick the gas engine if the accelerator pedal is placed in the floor because the electric motor simply does not have enough power. By using the e-Save mode, the system will conserve as much battery power as possible for later use where it is best – for electric off-road driving or for low-speed driving in city traffic. The system can charge the battery, using ICE as a generator, in e-Save mode at a speed of up to 3 kw under certain conditions, even if it is not an efficient way to charge the battery.

On a level 1 charger, Jeep said that it takes 12 to 14 hours to recharge the battery, and that the time is reduced to 3 to 4 hours on a level 2.

Fully capable

Despite having a split battery pack in the chassis (and a slightly smaller fuel tank), the PHEV version of the Grand Cherokee provides no capacity in the name of efficiency and has a total range of 470 miles.

Over the course of a day and over about 200 miles of driving both on and off-road, the Jeep delivered its EPA ratings of 25 miles of electric range, 56 MPGe and 23 mpg combined – for the most part. In mixed driving with the battery in 99% charge condition, the Grand Cherokee went 24.5 miles before the juice ran out and the driveline turned into hybrid mode with an average of 23.5 mpg, which is in line with EPA ratings. But from the start with an empty battery running in pure hybrid mode over the course of about 100 miles of mostly highway to Austin, Texas, the 4xe took just 18.5 mpg according to the trip computer. V-8 and V-6 can do it, and better without a complete hybrid system.

With electric power, the 8-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly without problems and the power is linear, but it is not enough. Put the accelerator pedal on the floor and the petrol engine will start, but it takes a full second. The point-and-shoot nature of the V-8-powered Grand Cherokee is lost here despite PHEV’s 0-60 mph sprint in 6.0 seconds compared to the V-8’s 6.9 sprint. It turned out to be difficult to find a hole in the traffic and drive into it from a stop, as it is difficult to predict that the entire driveline will wake up from its slumber.

In hybrid mode, during normal driving in the city, the driveline was smooth, with active noise reduction which obliterated the turbo-4’s flushing and rough noise when turning. But with almost 6,000 lb trailer and classic jeep mail car hooked to the back of the 4xe (which maximizes the 4xes traction, which we do not recommend doing), the speed rose and stopped over 3,000rpm to keep close to 40- plus mph. Pulling off a stop was easy thanks to the electric motor’s instant torque filling, but the turbo quickly became audible while maintaining speed. On the gravel test loop for towing, we could not top 40 mph safely, which means that highway speeds and passers-by will be left for another test day. It is clear from our very short first test that 4xe can pull the nominal 6,000 lb and there is no shortage of power. But if towing is the main privilege, the V-8 may be the better option. Towing is not an effective activity.

Offroading in 4xe is a mixed bag. The instantaneous torque from the electric motor is good in theory, but in practice it made climbing rock walls or over boulders somewhat more difficult as the power is either on or off as a light switch in only electric mode with 4xes gas setting. This led to some situations where the Grand Cherokee would swing back and forth as it was not easy to crawl up a steep slope smoothly.

Jeep said that the Max Regeneration mode mimics driving with a pedal in an EV, but that’s a distance. The system is easily engaged via a button on the dashboard (and it remains on even when cycling at 4xe) and bakes in more regenerative braking, but it is strongest below 40 mph. The system does not allow the Grand Cherokee to stop completely without using the brake pedal, and it creeps forward when you lift the brake. The Max Regeneration mode apparently reacted differently during off-road driving in all-electric mode, as it kept the jeep in place and helped modulate the power a bit to make it come online slower in tricky situations.

Effective, but is it a value?

Pricing for the Grand Cherokee 4xe 2022 is a bit of a puzzle. The base models cost $ 59,495 including the $ 1,795 destination fee. It is based on the Limited model in the gas-powered Grand Cherokee series, but comes better equipped with a 9-speaker Alpine sound system, 10.1-inch infotainment system with touch screen, 10.0-inch touch screen front passenger infotainment screen and panoramic sunroof, as similarly equipped involves a price surcharge of $ 6,655. Bake in the federal tax deduction, if you are fully eligible, and the 4xe base may cost less than a comparably equipped Limited in the end. A fully loaded Summit Reserve 4xe with night vision along with quilted leather and massaging front seats pushes up to $ 80,000 before tax deductions.

This places the 4xe in a near luxury area, where the Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge and BMW X5 PHEVs live. Both cost just a few thousand dollars more in basic form, are faster, just as powerful and more importantly, have more electric range. In the top and Summit reserve trim, the Grand Cherokee 4xe holds up, but in the lower trim it feels expensive and stretches the value limits before the tax deductions take hold.

Given that if towing is not the main goal, 4xe makes sense – especially if you were looking at a limited or higher trim with some options. It is more efficient, just as pleasant if not more to drive, and no Volvo or BMW has this level of off-road capacity.

Jeep flew me to Austin, got me to sleep in a hotel, gave me some food and made me drive to a ranch in the middle of nowhere, Texas to give you this first report.
