CR-V vs Jeep: Different approaches
Honda CR-V
The secret behind the Honda CR-V’s popularity is that it does almost everything well. A 190-horsepower 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine mated to a well-programmed continuously variable transmission (CVT) provides adequate acceleration and good fuel economy. It gets an EPA combined rating of 30 mpg with front-wheel drive (FWD) and 29 mpg with all-wheel drive (AWD), which is standard on the Touring and optional elsewhere.
You can also choose the CR-V Hybrid with standard all-wheel drive and 212 horsepower from its gas-electric powertrain that uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The hybrid model returns 38mpg and, as a bonus, is smoother and more refined. Both versions offer a pleasant ride and capable handling.
The interior is among the segment’s most spacious, if not the most luxurious. All but the base CR-Vs have a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, though more buttons and a settings button would be welcome.
All models include the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assistance features that include forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise. However, blind spot monitoring and cross traffic warning are not available at the rear of the base LX.
Jeep Cherokee
The Cherokee is the compact SUV that doesn’t forget it’s also a Jeep. Don’t expect many changes for the 2022 model as the 2021 model received a tech upgrade with more standard driver assistance features.
The Jeep Cherokee is comfortable and maneuverable around town or on the highway, and it also has a reasonable degree of off-road capability. That’s especially true of the Trailhawk version, which gets more robust 4-wheel drive hardware. Other details get a more road-oriented system, while front-wheel drive is standard.
We recommend skipping the base 2.4-liter engine, as its 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque are underpowered in this application. The available 2.0-liter turbo is a smart choice, providing 270 horsepower as well as better mileage. A 3.2-liter V6 with 271 horsepower is also available, but fuel economy drops. All pairs with 9-speed automatic transmission.
Cargo capacity is only mediocre at 27.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.7 with the rear bench folded.
All Cherokees come with forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist and rear cross-traffic alert. The infotainment system runs the user-friendly Uconnect touchscreen with either a 7- or an 8.4-inch screen.
