2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe: features, tires and options

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe mixes plug-in hybrid fuel economy and EV driving range into one of the toughest off-road SUVs available today. Jeep’s long-standing Wrangler is known for being tough when paved roads end. While many owners may buy a Wrangler just for its image and style that can go anywhere, 4xe proves that Jeep’s adventure-loving SUV can also change over time.

The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe drives a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and two electric motors that send a total of 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. While 4-wheel drive (4WD) is standard on every Wrangler, the Rubicon trim has a full-time 4WD system that is tough for harder use.

All versions of the 4xe are also equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission – a 6-speed manual transmission is available in the Wrangler, but not with the plug-in hybrid engine.

With the exception of the Wrangler 392, which is just as new for 2021, powered by a Hemi V8, the 4xe is one of the fastest in the entire Wrangler series. Even though it only comes in the larger 4-door Unlimited format, the 4xe only needs 6 seconds to drive from 0 to 60 mph. Top speed, if you feel cool, is 124 mph.

Probably more useful for most Jeep shoppers is the 220 km long range that is only available on electricity available in 4xe. The lithium-ion battery, located under the second-row seat cushion, can be charged in about 12 hours when using a standard household outlet. This is reduced to only 2 hours if a level 2 charging station is used.

Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Price and details

All three 4xe trims – Sahara, Rubicon and High Altitude – are offered in 4-door Unlimited format only. Expect to pay $ 53,505, excluding destination fees, for the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. This is several thousand dollars more expensive than the Sahara 4xe base and significantly more than the price tag below 30,000 USD for a 2-door format Wrangler.

However, remember that the Rubicon 4xe comes with many features that Jeep buyers would choose in their SUV. This includes front and rear locking differentials, larger off-road tires, rock rails, stronger transfer case, undercarriage slide plates, electronic sway bar (with push button clutch), plus front and rear towbars. On Rubicon 4xe, these happen to be painted blue.

Similar blue-tinted details include a black headdress with Surf Blue accents around it, along with blue seams used in the interior.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe is the same size as the regular Wrangler Unlimited. The Rubicon 4xe is 188.4 inches long and runs on a 118.4-inch wheelbase and has room for five on board. When it comes to everyday practice, the Unlimited is much more user-friendly than the 2-door Wrangler.

The second row is more spacious and easier to access, and the space of 31.7 cubic feet behind the second row is more than twice as much as the 2-door Wrangler. The cargo space is expanded to more than 72 cubic feet with folded rear seats.

Rubicon 4xe is motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in combination with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery placed under the rear seats. An 8-speed automatic transmission and 4WD are standard.

Three driver-selectable driving modes allow 4xe to be driven in hybrid format, with petrol engine and battery power, fully electric mode (for 21 miles), and what Jeep calls eSave mode. This prevents the battery from starting to start, which allows the driver to save the extra power when it is most needed.

While the EV range for the Rubicon 4xe is a plus, it’s worth noting that the mileage for the 4xe is less than what you get with the standard 3.6-liter V6. 4xe registers a combined city / highway average of 20 mpg, compared to 21 mpg in the V6-powered Wrangler Unlimited.

The blame lies in part on the extra weight of the 4xes battery pack. The 4xe also has a smaller fuel tank than other Jeep variants. This limits the total driving range to the EPA-estimated 370 miles, compared to about 450 miles of the range offered in most Wranglers.
