2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer or 2021 Jeep Compass? Advantages and disadvantages

Which is more important: to have real terrain capacity or look like you do? We’ve seen enough Jeep Wranglers on 22-inch wheels to know that real capacity is not always the reason people buy SUVs – appearance also matters. To that end, the 2021 Jeep Compass and 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer are trying to provide an all-rounder in a sub-compact package. Both crossovers’ fuel economy scores are higher than their breakover angles, but which is better off-road? Does it matter if you want a versatile, cheap and stylish SUV? Keep reading to find out the pros and cons of these two little crossovers.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer: Pros Over the Compass

Fuel economy

In most configurations, the Trailblazer charges a few more miles per gallon than the compass. Chevrolet offers it with a 1.2- or 1.3-liter turbo-three engine. The smaller engine is only FWD and returns 28/31 mpg city / highway. The larger engine gets 29/33 mpg with FWD, while AWD lowers it to 26/30 mpg.

At the same time, the compass is only equipped with a 2.4-liter I-4. It gets 22/31 mpg with FWD and 22/30 mpg with AWD. Expect the Compass Trailhawk to lose efficiency in both actions due to its off-road hardware. Although the Jeep is quite efficient on the highway given its extra cylinder, the Chevrolet makes more of every liter of gas when driving in the city.

Inner packaging

Trailblazer looks small on the outside but feels big on the inside. The clearance at the front row measures 40.0 inches, slightly more than the compass’s 39.2 inches. The ceiling height of the second row is 38.4 inches in the Trailblazer, about the same as the compass’s 38.5 inches. The legroom on the front row is 40.9 inches in the Chevy, smaller than the Jeep’s 41.8 inches. However, the second-row legroom is slightly larger in the Trailblazer, 39.4 inches to the Compass 38.3 inches.

Although the passenger compartment dimensions are similar, we have criticized the Compass for its lack of storage space for keys, telephones and other daily belongings. Trailblazer has no such problem; its center console and door compartments are designed to keep doodads within reach.


If you are looking for new wheels at the lowest price, Trailblazer is your choice here. The basic L-trim has an MSRP of $ 19,995. Sure, it’s the no-frills fleet spec model, but the one-step Trailblazer LS FWD is still cheap at $ 22,595. It’s smaller than the cheapest Compass – the Sport FWD trim – which starts at a comparatively steep $ 25,410.

Even in the high part, the Trailblazer falls short of the compass. When combined with AWD, the rugged Trailblazer Activ and street-styled RS details top the range at $ 27,995 each. At the same time, the Compass Trailhawk starts at $ 32,310. None of this means that you are necessarily a better value, but the Trailblazer is undeniably cheaper than the Compass.

Off-road capability

Can Trailblazer really hit a trail? Ehm, not really. In its basic FWD trim, the Compass is probably not much of a trail brute either. But a jeep is not a jeep but some off-road chops, and for that there is the Compass Trailhawk. This top model is equipped with a suspension lift, off-road tires, off-road driving modes and a low-range gearbox among its adventurous upgrades. The Trailhawk model is capable of off-road driving, but Compass models equipped with AWD also perform well in common scenarios with low traction. If you are looking for a real off-road rig, a sub-compact crossover is probably not the right choice. But if you need a small SUV and want to explore a little, Compass offers that hardware.

Cargo space

Here the compass hits the Trailblazer fairly – or should we say fair and cube? This is because its cargo space has 27.2 cubic feet of space behind the second row, or 59.8 cubic feet with the second row folded. Trailblazers’ cargo space is smaller, but not much; it offers 25.3 cubes behind the second row or 54.4 with the seats folded down. In addition, there is the Trailblazer with a flat folding front passenger seat to allow storage of long objects.

Ride quality

For as capable as it is off-road, the Compass rides well on dense surfaces as well – provided that these surfaces are smooth. It is reasonably smooth and quiet on good pavement and feels stable when rounding corners. The Trailhawk model’s generous sidewall tires seem to soften the ride even further. But we have discovered that the compass struggles on uneven, choppy roads, and it even shook and rattled over high-frequency shocks. It’s not good, but it’s better than Trailblazer. The small Chevy feels unnecessarily stiff and a collision with road errors causes a lot of noise inside the cabin. None of these SUVs are luxurious, but the compass is just a little more comfortable in most driving situations.


In a segment full of great options, the Jeep Compass and Chevrolet Trailblazer are honestly nowhere near the top. Still, they offer a bit appealing with stylish styling and versatility. Compass is not as efficient or affordable, but all-terrain capabilities back up its Jeep name. Trailblazer is not as robust or comfortable, but its smart and spacious interior suits the needs of modern riders. These crossovers need to be improved to gain a decisive advantage over the other.
